Most households, factories and offices use a range of solvents. These products give off vapours or are gases at normal temperatures and can be inhaled through the mouth or nose to give an intoxicating effect. This is sometimes called ‘glue sniffing’, ‘solvent abuse’ or ‘volatile substance abuse’ (VSA).
For instance: sugar (solute) + water (solvent) = sugar water (solution). The combination of a solute and a solvent is also called a solution. The water is known as the universal solvent since there are many substances that can be diluted in it. It can be in liquid, gaseous or solid state.
Solvents are chemicals that are commonly found in everyday products such as cleaning fluids, aerosols, lighter gas, nail varnishes and glue. At room temperature they turn into vapour that can be inhaled through the mouth or nose, making the user feel intoxicated.

Volatile solvents are not detected by routine drug screens. Many of them and their metabolites can be detected by gas chromatography at specialized laboratories, but such testing is rarely necessary or indicated except for forensic purposes.
