Evangelist Charles Finney once described revival as “the people of God renewing their obedience to God.”. Because God’s people tend to wander from him, revival may be as old as humanity itself. Using Finney’s definition, we can say that accounts of revival are recorded throughout the pages of the Old Testament.
Simply stated, revival is the unique and extraordinary work of God done according to His sovereign and holy will. Although the actual word “revival” does not occur in the Bible, verse after verse challenges us to a revived relationship with God. One where sin is confessed, wrongs are righted and our walk with God rekindled.

Charles Finney, a minister and leader in the Second Great Awak-ening, defined revival as “a renewed conviction of sin and repen-tance, followed by an intense desire to live in obedience to God.” Mid-twentieth-century British pastor Martyn Lloyd-Jones de-scribed it as “a period of unusual blessing and activity in the life of the Christian Church.”
