KRS 83A.085 outlines the following duties of the city clerk: Maintenance and safekeeping of the permanent records of the city; Performance of the duties required of the “official custodian” or “custodian” in accordance with the Kentucky Open Records Act; Possession of the seal of the city if used;
City governments in Kentucky operate under one of three models: mayor-council, commission or city manager. Although the mayor-council form is the most prevalent, each form has specific advantages for different needs facing cities.
We hope this bulletin helps city officials understand new laws governing operation of cities throughout the commonwealth. This bulletin is not a replacement for the actual language of the Kentucky Revised Statutes but is intended only to be a convenient reference regarding the organization, structure, and function of city governments.
It is impossible to carry out the duties of serving on a code enforcement board unless you familiarize yourself with the applicable state statutes, as well as your local ordinances, that govern code enforcement and nuisance in your community. Statutes are not contained in some magical spell book.
In carrying out its duty to supervise the departments of city government and the conduct of all city officers and employees under its jurisdiction, the commission may require any city officer or employee to prepare and submit to it sworn statements regarding the performance of his official duties.
83A.085 Office of city clerk required, except in city of first class -- Duties -- Combination with other nonelected city office -- Information on city and officials to Department for Local Government. (1) Each city, except a city of the first class, shall establish the office of city clerk.
