Rail transport in Pakistan began in 1855 during the British Raj, when several railway companies began laying track and operating in present-day Pakistan. The country's rail system has been nationalised as Pakistan Railways (originally the Pakistan Western Railway).
Pakistan Railways is the national, state-owned railway company of Pakistan. Founded in 1861 and headquartered in Lahore, it owns 7,791 kilometers of track across Pakistan from Torkham to Karachi, offering both freight and passenger services.
The country's railway system was originally a patchwork of local rail lines operated by small, private companies, including the Scinde Railway, Punjab Railway, Delhi Railway and Indus Flotilla. In 1870, the four companies combined to form the Scinde, Punjab & Delhi Railway.

The network of railways in Pakistan is based on 11,881 kilometres (7,383 miles) of train tracks. However, around 80% of the tracks are a part of historical constructions as old as 80 to 90 years.
Background. The Indus was bridged at Attock in 1887 and that allowed railways in India to run from the westernmost post of Khyber Pass to the eastern city of Calcutta. India's rail link to the port of Karachi was however, still broken at the Indus flowing between the towns of Rohri and Sukkur.

1 Δεκ 2020 · The Lahore railway station was one of the earliest built railway stations in Pakistan. It was the junction (worked by the Sindh, Punjab, and Delhi Railway Company) and the headquarter of North Western railways.
