4 Αυγ 2017 · Although early railroads primarily facilitated travel within Ohio, railroad construction in the mid-1850s began to connect Ohio with the rest of the country. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad crossed the Appalachian Mountains, providing easier access to and from the East Coast.

Construction began in 1835 in Sandusky and was completed through Tiffin, Kenton, and Springfield by the late 1840s. Not too many years passed before Mansfield and Richland County sought a connection to this busy line.

These sites are concentrated primarily in the Near East Side, Reynoldsburg, Northeast Columbus, Worthington, and Westerville.
During the 19th century, a network of secret routes and safe houses were set-up to assist enslaved African Americans to escape through free states into Canada. This passage for freedom seekers became known as the Underground Railroad, which stretched across the U.S. and included states like Ohio.

We will touch on some of the concerns within our community, benefits to the city, early maps of the railroads in our area, and the men who built the rail lines.
