4 Αυγ 2017 · Although early railroads primarily facilitated travel within Ohio, railroad construction in the mid-1850s began to connect Ohio with the rest of the country. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad crossed the Appalachian Mountains, providing easier access to and from the East Coast.

4 Νοε 2021 · Construction of the railroad prior to the Civil War was done by enslaved labor. In 1830, more than 35 percent of Columbus’ population was Black. In 1860, 40 percent of white families owned slaves, most with six or fewer.
