Most people with lupus have mild disease characterized by episodes — called flares — when signs and symptoms get worse for a while, then improve or even disappear completely for a time. The signs and symptoms of lupus that you experience will depend on which body systems are affected by the disease.
Antimalarial agents are the first-line therapy for all types of cutaneous lupus erythematosus. A clinical effect may be seen as early 2 weeks; if there is no change in 12 weeks, therapy should be escalated. Combination therapy of 2 antimalarial agents (HCQ + CQ) or quinacrine can be tried first.

Arthritis, fever, serositis, sicca symptoms, Raynaud's syndrome, lung disease and neuropsychiatric symptoms are more common in patients with elderly-onset lupus, while malar rash, discoid lupus and glomerulonephritis are less common in elderly-onset patients compared with younger lupus patients.
