Foto East LA, a community history project of the County of Los Angeles Public Library, is an online collection of images depicting the history of one of the nation’s most culturally rich communities.
The Los Angeles Public Library’s photo collection has many old photographs of the East Los Angeles area. The Japanese American Museum also has a project on Boyle Heights that has a collection of historic photographs of the community.
The images mainly depict Southern California, with the largest number representing the City of Los Angeles, and provide comprehensive information about many activities and events important to Southern California in the late 19th and early 20th century.
He wanted to understand their culture. His photos show the real East LA of the 1970s. You see Chicano culture, with its cool cars and unique style. He captured everyday moments: people hanging out with friends, families at home, kids playing in the streets. Cesaretti’s pictures weren’t posed or fake. They showed life as it was.

8 Μαρ 2012 · A recommended seminal history book is Ricardo Romo's East Los Angeles, History of a Barrio, 1983, Univ. of Texas Press. Educators recently toured parts of this vast unincorporated area of L.A. County as part of a teachers conference called Facing History and Ourselves.
In 1991, Photo Friends and the Los Angeles Public Library sponsored the project “Shades of L.A.: A Search for Visual Ethnic History.” The six-year project involved copying thousands of family photographs throughout Los Angeles, thereby broadening the LAPL Photo Collection’s representation of ethnicities within the city.
