A common error is in a fax transmission is telephone line noise, which distorts the image of a fax. If a phone line is noisy, ECM can result in a higher success rate for fax transmissions.
ECM stands for Error Correction Mode. When ECM is active, fax pages are sent in blocks. If a block of fax pages fails the error check, the fax receiver will request that the sender re-transmit the block of pages until all blocks have been received successfully.
ECM is a better system of page information verification than is originally used with fax. ECM breaks the page down to smaller portions so when a piece is missing, the recipient can request just that piece rather than resending the whole page.
