This chapter will introduce you to elements of social work assessment, incorporating principles, context, models, frameworks, skills and practice issues. It will draw reference from across the range of service user groups and invites you to reflect on and critically explore the material.
There are frameworks for assessing people at various life stages from infancy to old age, and for people who may have a diverse set of issues potentially warranting social work or other forms of intervention (e.g. Berg et al., 2000; Gimpel, 1997; Lyons et al., 1999).
Identify the components of an explicitly stated learning outcome. Articulate strategies for creating learning experiences that are experiential. Examine principles for creating competency-based performance assessments. Develop strategies for providing quality feedback.
The centrality of assessment work is recognised also in social work education. Indeed, being skilled in conducting assessments is a key requirement for social workers and is recognised in the government’s drive to improve social work education (Department of Health, 2002a). By developing a plausible model of how the program is supposed to work, the evaluator can consider social science theories related to the program as well as program resources, activities, processes, and outcomes and assumptions (Bickman, 1987).
