Edwin M. Stanton was the secretary of war who, under Pres. Abraham Lincoln, tirelessly presided over the giant Union military establishment during most of the American Civil War (1861–65). Admitted to the Ohio bar in 1836, Stanton became a highly successful attorney.

Though he had not been a political supporter of Lincoln's before joining the cabinet, he became devoted to him, and worked diligently to direct military operations until the end of the conflict.
