In this paper, I examine the colonial experience of one country, India, and estimate the di erential impact of British colonialism on directly ruled areas compared to areas under indirect control of the colonial power. I am able to solve the selection problem by using speci c policies of British colonial rule in India.
12 Ιουλ 2023 · In 40 years, between 1880 and 1920, British colonialism killed 100 million Indians and, according to research by economic historian, Robert Allen, extreme poverty in India increased under British rule, from 23% in 1810 to more than 50% in the mid-20th century.
The essay reinterprets the British colonial empire in India (the Raj, for short) as a state. Based on that reinterpretation it offers fresh assessments on three issues: how its policies shaped the economy of India, what lessons the postcolonial state drew from history, and the gains and costs of the postcolonial development strategy.
