In this paper, I examine the colonial experience of one country, India, and estimate the di erential impact of British colonialism on directly ruled areas compared to areas under indirect control of the colonial power. I am able to solve the selection problem by using speci c policies of British colonial rule in India.
Download PDF. The period 1700 to 1900 saw the beginnings, and the development, of the British Empire in India. Empire was not planned, at least not in the early stages. In a sense, it just happened. The first British in India came for trade, not territory; they were businessmen, not conquerors.
This article utilizes a three-pronged analytical model to examine the mechanics of British colonialism and its socioeconomic and political consequences in India. Those three elements are divide and rule, colonial education, and British laws.
The essay reinterprets the British colonial empire in India (the Raj, for short) as a state. Based on that reinterpretation it offers fresh assessments on three issues: how its policies shaped the economy of India, what lessons the postcolonial state drew from history, and the gains and costs of the postcolonial development strategy.
British usurped the Portuguese and added India to its growing global empire. Although British rule in India was often oppressive and violent, British colonization of India led to an exchange between both societies that greatly influenced the trade, politics, and culture of each.
British idea of freedom, equality, liberty and human rights along with western education resulted in to massive social-religious, reform movements and had great impact on the society. It brought a more scientific, rational and modern approach to life among Indians.
This paper compares economic outcomes across areas in India which were under the direct colonial rule of British administrators with areas which were under indirect colonial rule.
