The construction of animal shaped (effigy) mounds was a regional cultural phenomenon. The monument is home to a wide diversity of flora and fauna and helped shape the lifestyles and the belief systems of the moundbuilders.

Effigy Mounds National Monument preserves more than 200 prehistoric mounds built by pre-Columbian Mound Builder cultures, mostly in the first millennium CE, during the later part of the Woodland period of pre-Columbian North America.

Effigy Mounds NM is difficult to visit. It’s 100+ miles from any decent-sized city. The main things to see are the mounds, especially those shaped like bears and birds (the “effigies”) and some Mississippi River views. The mounds are 1,000-2,000 years old and there are dozens at the NM.
