He is one of the oldest deities in the Egyptian pantheon and was later merged with others such as Horus, becoming Ra-Horakhty (the morning sun), Amun (as noonday sun), and Atum (the evening sun) associated with primal life-giving energy. Ra is the Egyptian word for 'sun'.
Ra ruled in all parts of the created world: the sky, the Earth, and the underworld. [5] He was believed to have ruled as the first pharaoh of Ancient Egypt. [6] He was the god of the sun, order, kings and the sky. Ra was portrayed as a falcon and shared characteristics with the sky-god Horus.

The name Ra-Horakhty meant “Ra-Horus of the Double Horizon” and signified the sun conquering its enemies during the night so that it could rise again. Horus was a complicated god, and had no fewer than 15 forms associated with him.
As the sun god, Ra was associated with the power of the pharaoh, who was seen as his earthly counterpart. In ancient Egypt, the worship of Ra was widespread and deeply ingrained in the culture. Temples dedicated to Ra were built throughout the country, and his cult was one of the most important in Egyptian society.
