4 Σεπ 2019 · Wikipedia claims that the bit stands for Binary digIT, which would mean that either that's a bacronym (since I assume 8 bits/byte wass chosen for a reason other than an analogy to currency). Is this just a weird coincidence?
Current software uses encodings based on 8 (UTF-8), 16 (UTF-16) or 32 (UTF-32) bit code units, combining multiple code units to form a single code point where necessary, but those bits sizes are a consequence of the hardware, not of the character set.

Very early computer developers decided to create bytes out of 8 bits. Let's see how many combinations we can create using eight bits, set to a state of 0 or 1: 0000 0000 = 0. 0000 0001 = 1.
In a chip: electric charge = 0/1. In a hard drive: spots of North/South magnetism = 0/1. A bit is too small to be much use. Group 8 bits together to make 1 byte. Everything in a computer is 0's and 1's. The bit stores just a 0 or 1: it's the smallest building block of storage.
