Orbital diagrams are pictorial representations of the electron configuration, showing the individual orbitals and the pairing arrangement of electrons. We start with a single hydrogen atom (atomic number 1), which consists of one proton and one electron.

Electron configuration diagrams. An electron configuration diagram is a model that depicts the position of electrons as they orbit the nucleus of an atom. Electrons are represented by dots or crosses and are positioned in energy levels, or ‘shells’, around the central nucleus.
Electrons in orbitals are shown using arrows, where the direction of the arrow indicates the spin state of the electron. For example, in the diagram that follows, the upward ( ) and downward ( ) arrows indicate electrons in different spin states.
In order to assign atoms electronic configurations (detailed shell diagrams), we have to discuss the angular momentum quantum number l, which has values that range from 0 to n -1 for each value of n. For each value of l, a letter is used to represent the corresponding type of atomic orbital.

Objectives. To determine the electron configuration of any of the first 38 elements of the periodic table. To determine the identity of an element from its electron configuration. To complete an orbital diagram using arrows to represent electrons.
The orbital occupied by the 1st and 2nd electrons make up shell one, and the 4 orbitals occupied 3rd by the through 10th electrons make up shell two. As we’ll see, when atoms bond together into molecules, the orbitals change shape and in many cases the orbitals of multiple atoms merge.
