Visit PAWS’ 2,300-acre ARK 2000 sanctuary in the heart of California’s Gold Country for our unique “Seeing the Elephant” educational experience. We are located in the Gold Rush town of San Andreas in Calaveras County, where “seeing the elephant” is once again an unequaled experience.
The Performing Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) rescues abused, neglected, retired and needy captive wildlife through intervention and legislation designed to prohibit indiscriminate breeding of exotic animals for the pet industry and the use of wild animals in entertainment.
At Performing Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) sanctuaries, rescued animals live in peaceful, natural habitats, free from fear, chains, and harsh confinement. They are at complete liberty to act out natural behaviors in the comfort of their individually designed enclosures.
As of January 2023, all of the rescued and retired wild animals PAWS cares for are now in one place, our 2,300-acre ARK 2000 sanctuary in San Andreas, California. As a result, our original sanctuary in Galt and the Amanda Blake Memorial Wildlife Refuge in Herald are now closed.
