EMB agar is used in water quality tests to distinguish coliforms and fecal coliforms that signal possible pathogenic microorganism contamination in water samples.
EMB Agar is used for the isolation of fecal coliforms. EMB Agar can be streaked for isolation or used in the Membrane Filter Technique. EMB agar inoculated with Escherichia coli demonstrates growth with green-metallic sheen colonies.
4 Ιαν 2022 · EMB Agar (Eosin Methylene Blue Agar) is recommended for the isolation and differentiation of gram negative enteric bacteria from clinical and nonclinical specimens. It is useful in differentiating gram positive and gram-negative bacteria.

Figure 1: Eosin-methylene blue ( EMB) agar plate inoculated with Escherichia coli (a Gram-negative coliform bacterium) showing good growth of dark blue-black colonies with metallic green sheen indicating vigorous fermentation of lactose and acid production which precipitates the green metallic pigment. INTENDED USE. Hardy Diagnostics EMB Agar formulations are recommended for use as selective and differential media for the isolation of gram-negative bacilli (including coliform organisms and enteric pathogens) from clinical and nonclinical specimens.
EMB Agar is recommended for the isolation and differentiation of gram negative enteric bacteria from clinical and nonclinical specimens. Methylene blue and Eosin-Y inhibit gram positive bacteria. The ratio of eosin and methylene blue is adjusted to 6:1.
