The General Motors Model SD35 locomotive, Fig. 1-1 or the Model SDP35, Fig. 1-3, is equipped with a turbocharged diesel engine that delivers 2500 horsepower to the main generator for tractive purposes. This power is then distributed to six traction motors, each of which is directly geared to a pair of driving wheels.
27 Αυγ 2024 · The SD35 was a 2,500 horsepower, six-axle, locomotive - part of EMD's Special Duty line - that provided signficantly greater tractive effort than its four-axle counterpart. Produced between June, 1964 and January, 1966, it was a transitional model in the EMD catalog, boasting one of the final variants of the builder's legendary 567 prime mover.

Between 1964 and 1966, EMD built a total of 360 six-axle 2,500hp SD35 locomotives. An additional 35 steam generator-equipped SDP35 locomotives were also built during this period. These were all part of EMD’s “35-Series” which also featured the four-axle, 2,500hp GP35 locomotive.
This page is dedicated to EMD's model SD35. EMD built 360 SD35 units for numerous railroads. It is interesting to note that more SD35s were built with high, short hoods (190) than were built with low, short hoods (170.)

The EMD SD35 is a model of 6-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between June 1964 and January 1966. Power was provided by an EMD 567D3A , 16- cylinder engine which generated 2,500 brake horsepower (1,900 kW).
