The Mali Empire is one of the largest and most widely known precolonial African states. It has featured in films, video games, works of fiction, and its memory is still a profound force in the articulation of social and political identities across Mande West Africa.
In particular, it focuses on two empires in very different parts of the world: the Mali Empire in West Africa, and the Mongol Empire in Eurasia. Of central importance are the ways in which military conquest, trade, and technology aided the development of these empires.
The area that is now Mali was once part of the three great precolonial Sudanic empires: Ghana, Mali, and Songhai. The country is also home to the historically important trading and learning centre of Timbuktu .

The history of the Mali Empire begins when the first Mande people entered the Manding region during the period of the Ghana Empire. After its fall, the various tribes established independent chiefdoms. In the 12th century, these were briefly conquered by the Sosso Empire under Soumaoro Kante.
