  2. The term enculturation was first coined by cultural anthropologist Melville Herskovits in 1948. Herskovits’ definition of enculturation includes a process of novel change and inquiry. Two phases of enculturation, according to Herskovits, can be distinguished:

  3. Enculturation is the process by which children are socialized to the standard modes of thinking, feeling, and behaving considered appropriate for an adult in a given society.

  4. Learnedtaught by someone to someone else, usually parent to child. This process is called enculturation. Shared—groups share norms—the way things ought to be done—and values—what is true, right, and beautiful; Symbolic—culture creates meaning; it is the story we tell ourselves about ourselves

  5. Enculturation and acculturation are used in many social sciences discourses including sociology, psychology, anthropology, political science, education, and linguistics; however, in keeping with the root word “culture” the home discipline is anthropology.

  6. In this chapter, we define and discuss the concepts of acculturation and enculturation, as well as theories and research on the consequences of acculturation and enculturation for Asian American families.

  7. It is proposed that enculturation be defined as a construct, and a process in a behavioral sense, that delineates transmission and transmutation of culture throughout human growth.
