Æthelred le Malavisé, ou Æthelred II (vers 966 / 968 – 23 avril 1016), est roi d'Angleterre de 978 à sa mort, avec une interruption de quelques mois entre fin décembre 1013 et février 1014. Fils du roi Edgar le Pacifique, Æthelred monte sur le trône après l'assassinat de son frère aîné Édouard.
Æthelred (ou Ethelred) et Æthelberht (ou Ethelbert, Ethelbricht) sont deux princes anglo-saxons du VII e siècle. Issus de la maison royale du royaume de Kent, ils sont vénérés comme saints et martyrs par l'Église catholique.
Æthelred est roi de Mercie, royaume anglo-saxon des Midlands, de 675 à 704. Fils de Penda, Æthelred monte sur le trône à la mort de son frère Wulfhere. Dès sa première année de règne, il envahit le Kent et ses troupes détruisent la ville de Rochester.
His son Edward the Elder conquered the eastern Danelaw, but Edward's son Æthelstan became the first king to rule the whole of England when he conquered Northumbria in 927, and he is regarded by some modern historians as the first true king of England.
