Æthelred II (Old English: Æþelræd, [n 1] pronounced [ˈæðelræːd]; Old Norse: Aðalráðr; c. 966 – 23 April 1016), known as Æthelred the Unready, was King of the English from 978 to 1013 and again from 1014 until his death in 1016. [1]
21 Απρ 2016 · A silver penny struck more than ten centuries ago (on display in the Fitzwilliam Museum) shows Æthelred, King of the English. The obverse shows the king in profile and the reverse a Christian cross. Thousands of similar coins have survived.

William, a prolific English historian who wrote in the twelfth century, helped create the image of a slothful, sinful, inept king that remains so strongly attached to Æthelred today. Much earlier accounts make it clear that Æthelred’s reign ended badly, but do not contain the vivid stories of a wicked king who could barely stay awake.

30 Νοε 2019 · Colorful as these later legends may be, it is not hard to see why Æthelred was singled out for abuse among the many Anglo-Saxon kings of England. During his 38-year reign, viking hordes invaded England repeatedly, apparently with great success.
27 Μαρ 2020 · A Norse saga tells of a battle when King Æthelred returned to attack Danish-occupied London. According to the saga, the Danes lined London Bridge and showered the attackers with spears. Undaunted, the attackers pulled the roofs off nearby houses and held them over their heads in the boats.
