As such, environmental graphic design, or EGD, which can be defined as the graphic communication of information in the built environment, is one of the world’s oldest professions.

Along with technological development, the EGD was also becoming more complex, including the creation of interactive maps, electronic navigation systems and visual design for public spaces.
From ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics lining the walls of tombs to modern-day floor-to-ceiling murals in lobbies, environmental graphic design has been prevalent all throughout history, including in schools, museums, retailers, airports and more.
Environmental graphic design has been applied extensively throughout history in places such as schools, galleries, workspaces, and more. It can be seen in everything from ancient Egyptian inscriptions decorating tomb walls to contemporary room paintings in lobbies.
Architectural graphics woven into the environment solidify narratives, culture, and history, and build a sense of community. The combination of graphics and architecture is what most inspired environmental graphic design pioneer Deborah Sussman.
