Equine gastric ulcer syndrome (EGUS) is common in performance horses. Diagnosis of EGUS is based on history, clinical signs, endoscopic examination, and response to treatment. All ages and breeds of horses are susceptible to EGUS and current therapeutic strategies focus on blocking gastric acid secretion and raising stomach pH.
The diagnosis of equine gastric ulcer syndrome (EGUS) is confounded by the fact that there is not a well defined (pathognomonic) set of associated clinical signs. Furthermore, there is some inconsistency in the relationship between the presence of ulcer lesions, their severity and the manifestation of clinical signs.

Gastric ulcers can only be diagnosed definitively through gastric endoscopy, or gastroscopy, which involves placing an endoscope into the stomach and looking at its surface. This procedure is easy to perform, is minimally invasive, and allows for the evaluation of the esophagus, stomach, and small intestine.
