Erythromycin eye ointment is a topical antibiotic that is applied to the lower conjunctival sac of each eye of the newborn within 1 hour of birth. The purpose of this intervention is to prevent ophthalmia neonatorum, a serious eye infection caused by gonorrhea or chlamydia that can lead to blindness if untreated.
For ophthalmic ointment dosage form: For treatment of eye infections: Adults and children—Use in the eyes up to six times a day as directed by your doctor. For prevention of neonatal conjunctivitis and ophthalmia neonatorum: Newborn babies—Use in the eyes once at birth.
Erythromycin ointment is close to 100% effective in preventing gonorrhea eye infections, but chlamydia infections can still pop up as long as 2 weeks after delivery. When this happens, only oral antibiotics provide effective treatment.
