After the crusaders had conquered the area by 1227, Estonia was ruled initially by the King of Denmark in the north, by the Livonian Order, an autonomous part of the Monastic state of the Teutonic Knights and by the ecclesiastical states of the Holy Roman Empire.
Tallinn (/ ˈtælɪn /) [5][6] is the capital and most populous city of Estonia. Situated on a bay in north Estonia, on the shore of the Gulf of Finland of the Baltic Sea, Tallinn has a population of about 457,000 (as of 2024) [2] and administratively lies in the Harju maakond (county).
Today, Estonia is an ethnically fairly diverse country, ranking 97th out of 239 countries and territories in 2001 study by Kok Kheng Yeoh. [29] In 2008, thirteen of Estonia's fifteen counties were over 80% ethnic Estonian. The counties with the highest percentage Estonians are Hiiu County (98.4%) and Saare County (98.3%).
The official language of Estonia is Estonian, a Uralic language of the Finnic branch, which is related to Finnish. It is unrelated to the bordering Russian and Latvian languages, both of which are Indo-European (more specifically East Slavic and Baltic, respectively). Minority languages.
