The most influential theoretical perspective on social support hypothesizes that support reduces the effects of stressful life events on health (i.e., acts as a stress buffer) through either the supportive actions of others (e.g., advice, reassurance) or the belief that support is available.
Unilateral decisions and overruling of objections should be avoided when possible, and reinforced by legal or ethical authorities when necessary. An ethics consultant, especially one skilled and experienced in management of end-of-life issues, can be a helpful negotiator and guide.
