Overview. The Ambient Air Quality Directives set EU air quality standards for 12 air pollutants: sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide / nitrogen oxides, particulate matter (PM 10, PM 2.5), ozone, benzene, lead, carbon monoxide, arsenic, cadmium, nickel, and benzo (a)pyrene.
Air pollution has decreased over the last decades in the EU, as a result of EU clean air legislation and joint action taken by the EU and national, regional and local authorities. Yet air quality remains a serious concern for European citizens1. The EU’s approach to improving air quality involves taking action in three areas (or ‘pillars’).
