A special occasion license allows a bona fide nonprofit organization to sell liquor at a specific time, date and place. Examples of events include fundraising dinners, gala events, auctions, and wine tastings.
What does this permit allow? This permit allows noncommercial entities to sell beer, cider, wine, and spirits at fundraising events or social gatherings they conduct. The proceeds of the event or gathering must be used to support the tax-exempt activities of the noncommercial entity.
Non-profits can have alcohol at events without a special occasion license, if you hire a caterer who is licensed to sell alcohol at events. The proceeds must go directly to the caterer, not the nonprofit.
