How many countries have authoritarian governments? According to the 2023 Democracy Index, approximately 60 nation worldwide have authoritarian governments. These countries include Iran, North Korea, Laos, Saudi Arabia, Eritrea, Uzbekistan, and Libya.
Examples include Great Britain, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, Japan, the Netherlands and about 40 other states. Few of these, however, are absolute monarchies in which the sovereign exercises sole power. Considerably more widespread are the parliamentary or constitutional monarchies.
