Specific examples of colloids include milk, ink, paints, blood, and mayonnaise. They can be liquid or solid [1] particles dispersed in a gaseous, liquid, or solid medium, as well as gases dispersed in liquids and solids. When solid or liquid particles are dispersed in a gas they are known as aerosols, smoke, or fog.
Colloid is a term that has come to encompass solid particles suspended in a liquid (a colloidal dispersion), microscopic droplets in a liquid (an emulsion), or either solid or liquid phases suspended in a gas (an aerosol).
