27 Σεπ 2022 · A colloid is a mixture consisting of microscopic particles suspended in another medium. Examples include milk, smoke, gelatin, ink, and hand lotion. In chemistry, a colloid is a mixture of tiny particles that are dispersed in another medium. The particles are microscopic in size, ranging from 1 nanometer (nm) to 1 micrometer (μm) in diameter.
Colloid is a term that has come to encompass solid particles suspended in a liquid (a colloidal dispersion), microscopic droplets in a liquid (an emulsion), or either solid or liquid phases suspended in a gas (an aerosol).
Examples. Continuous phase is often water. Wide range of sizes: bovine serum albumin: 3 nm. cells: tens of microns. Classify colloids as hydrophobic (e.g., carbon black) or hydrophilic (e.g., red blood cell). Stability of colloid: essential part of its function. whether or not it will coagulate.
Colloid. In a colloid, one substance forms clumps of particles in the other substance. The clumps are so small that they do not settle out.
Colloids are a type of mixture, with one substance dispersed as particles in another substance. These mixtures can be classified based on the particle size and the nature of the dispersed phase. The different categories of colloids include emulsions, foams, aerosols, sols, and gels.
Another class of mixtures called colloids (or colloidal dispersions) exhibit properties intermediate between those of suspensions and solutions (Figure 11.29). The particles in a colloid are larger than most simple molecules; however, colloidal particles are small enough that they do not settle out upon standing.
