Literary texts invite close reading. They invite the reader to take an interpretive stance (Goldman et al., 2015), and they reward the reader who is willing to reflect on what they mean. When literary texts are particularly powerful (as in the case of Shakespeare's plays), they can become important parts of the shared experience of a community.
