Linguistic devices to respectively display uncertainty, doubt for author’s claims, and reduce commitment with ‘softened’ words thus respecting author’s ideas. Allow a writer to show their opinion/interpretation of a topic, or how strong a writer feels for the stated claim.
One significant way in which the author’s degree of confidence can be expressed in academic writing is through the use of hedges and boosters (Hyland, 1994, 2000).
Boosters like clearly, obviously and of course allow writers to express conviction and to mark their involvement and solidarity with an audience (Myers, 1989; Hyland, 1998a and b).

The language used in English texts should be understandable to speakers of Irish/British English (defined in the introduction to this guide as the shared standard usage of Ireland and the United Kingdom).
