There are three main aspects of stair design dictated by code: means of egress component requirements, structural design, and allowable materials/fire resistance ratings. Means of Egress Requirements. Stairway code requirements are partially detailed in Sections 1005.3.1 and 1011 of the 2018 International Building Code (IBC).
Install support posts and footings on the deck at the location of the deck stairs, indicated in the drawing below. The posts should be a minimum of 36" apart (the minimum width of a run of stairs). Install 2x8 (min) framing between posts (to support the upper end of the stair stringers) directly under the outside joist of the deck.
