The theory contends that a series of external social factors and internal qualities effectively insulate certain individuals from criminal involvement even when ecological variables induce others to engage in crime.

Though interdisciplinary in nature, containment theory is considered one of the earliest control theories because it is focused on what stops people from engaging in crime— or rather, what “contains” people (contains or containment essentially being used in place of the term controls).
