On July 4, 1863, the victorious Union Army marched into Vicksburg, and the United States flag was raised over the courthouse. Having to surrender was bad enough, but doing it on Independence Day made things worse for the citizens, and they didn’t forget the pain of surrender.

The surrender brought an end to 47 days of unendurable siege, but it also brought an end to Confederate control of the Mississippi River.
