A pedigree chart analysis is a genetic representation depicting the family tree or biological relationship between individuals of the new generation and their ancestors. This post mainly focuses on the definition, types, symbols, examples and importance, points to read the pedigree chart.
Scientists can analyze pedigree charts to study how inherited disorders are transmitted. The most common modes of inheritance are autosomal recessive, autosomal dominant, X-linked recessive, and X-linked dominant.
To do this, scientists create family trees, called pedigrees, showing as many generations of a family as they can and marking who had which phenotype. Two pedigree examples are shown in Figure 2 below.
Specifically, a pedigree allows you to track how a particular genetic trait has been passed down through several family generations. Scientists use pedigrees to study how certain genetic traits are inherited, and to predict how a trait may be passed on to future generations.
