The Catholicos of All Armenians (Armenian: Ամենայն Հայոց Կաթողիկոս) is the chief bishop and spiritual leader of Armenia's national church, the Armenian Apostolic Church, and the worldwide Armenian diaspora.
This is a list of the catholicoi of all Armenians (Armenian: Ամենայն Հայոց Կաթողիկոս), head bishops of the Armenian Apostolic Church (Armenian: Հայ Առաքելական Եկեղեցի). [1] To this day 21 Catholicoi of a total of 132 have been glorified within the church.
In April of 1995 Catholicos Karekin II was elected Catholicos of All Armenians in Etchmiadzin, Armenia. In June of 1995, Archbishop Aram Keshishian, the Primate of the Armenian Church in Lebanon, was elected Catholicos of Cilicia by an Electoral Assembly composed of 185 clergy and lay delegates.
Catholicos Aram I was ordained as a celibate priest in 1968 and obtained the title of Vartabed (Doctor of the Armenian Church) in 1970. In 1978, he was elected Primate of the Armenian Orthodox Community in Lebanon, and received episcopal ordination in 1980.
Armenian Catholics originated in what is today Armenia, Georgia and Eastern Europe. Beginning in the late 1920s, persecution caused many Armenian Catholics to emigrate.
27 Αυγ 2024 · This summer marked 25 years since the passing of His Holiness Karekin I, the 131st Catholicos of All Armenians. His Holiness had the distinction of being the first catholicos elected in the free Republic of Armenia. That fact alone would have secured his place in our history.
6 Μαρ 2015 · St. Gregory, known as Gregory the Illuminator, was successful in converting King Tiridates, and from the year 301 onward Christianity became the official national religion in Armenia. Gregory, considered to be the first Catholicos of the Armenian Church, ruled for twenty-five years.
