In the compatability tab, check the 'run this program in compatability mode for' checkbox and select Windows XP, service pack 2 from the dropdown list and further down check the 'run this program as an administrator' checkbox - hit apply, then try running the game.

I have seen many discussions about running the game on Windows 10 (my current OS) with issues occurring and possible workarounds, and I've tried them all, from what I can tell. I've altered the settings.cfg file, run as administrator and in compatibility mode, even reinstalling the game and adding the exe to the virus protection exclusion.
