17 Ιαν 2024 · The poverty thresholds are the original version of the federal poverty measure. They are updated each year by the Census Bureau . The thresholds are used mainly for statistical purposes — for instance, preparing estimates of the number of Americans in poverty each year.
Federal Poverty Lines. For purposes of the premium tax credit, eligibility for a certain year is based on the most recently published set of poverty lines as of the first day of open enrollment for coverage for that year. As a result, the tax credit for 2021 will be based on the 2020 federal poverty lines.
These annual updates increase the Census Bureau’s current official poverty thresholds by the relevant percentage change in the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI–U). The 2021 guidelines reflect the 1.2 percent price increase between calendar years 2019 and 2020.
