Today, most of Indiana’s pheasants live in northwest counties including Jasper, Benton and Newton where you find agricultural fields mixed with permanent cover like native prairie and CRP fields.
18 Νοε 2016 · We have several game birds in Indiana, but one of the most beautiful is the Ring-necked Pheasant. Ring-necked Pheasants seem natural in our landscape, but they are not native to the United States.
The pheasant is a great example of sexual dimorphism. Males, or cock birds, are gaudy in colorization, with copper and bronze colored breast feathers, iridescent green and violet colored head feathers, and bright red eye patches. A lengthy group of tail feathers are usually also present. The females, or hens, are drab brown in color.
Ring-necked Pheasants stride across open fields and weedy roadsides in the U.S. and southern Canada. Males sport iridescent copper-and-gold plumage, a red face, and a crisp white collar; their rooster-like crowing can be heard from up to a mile away.
The female Ring-necked Pheasant chooses her nest site, which is usually less than half a mile from her wintering range. Nests are usually surrounded by tall vegetation and built on the ground, often in a natural depression or a hollow that the female scoops out herself, about a third of an inch to 3 inches deep.
Roosters typically have a harem of several females during spring mating season. Hen pheasants nest on the ground, producing a clutch of around twelve eggs over a two to three week period in April to June. The incubation period is about 23 days.
Female. Fairly large game bird with long, pointed tail. Usually forages on the ground in agricultural, grassy or brushy areas. Females form flocks of up to 18 birds in summer and 30 or more in winter.
