The United States is the most successful team in Women's World Cup history, having won four titles in five finals. Germany has two titles and finished as runners-up once; Japan and Norway each have one title and have both finished as runners-up in another final.
The World Cup final is the last match of the competition, played by the only two teams remaining in contention, and the result determines which country is declared the world champion. It is a one-off match decided in regulation time. In case of a draw, extra time is used.
The FIFA World Cup was planned to take place in 1942. Germany officially applied to host the 1942 FIFA World Cup at the 23rd FIFA Congress on 13 August 1936 in Berlin. In June 1939, Brazil also applied to host the tournament.
