17 Οκτ 2024 · The Indian Rebellion of 1857 was a widespread but unsuccessful revolt against British rule in India. It began when Indian troops (sepoys) in the service of Britain’s East India Company refused to use purportedly tainted weaponry.
Essentially anti-colonial, it was supplemented by visions of independent, economic development with a secular, democratic, republican, and civil-libertarian political structure. After the 1930s, the movement took on a strong socialist orientation.
