Clavicle fractures take 6-12 weeks to heal. Recovery involves exercises and sling use for immobilization.
Clavicle fractures take the same time to heal with or without surgery. Usually, the breaks heals in around 6-8 weeks but it is fairly common that it can take up to 3 months.
A small randomised controlled trial was recently published ; it included 60 participants with an acute, isolated middle-third clavicle fracture. The authors compared the broad arm sling with the figure-of-eight bandage; their outcome measures were pain, Constant and American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons scores and degree of radiographic union.
Most experts advise immobilization if surgery is not needed. The sling or brace can be worn for two or three weeks while limiting activity levels. The patient can then gently ease back into action a little bit at a time according to his or her tolerance.
