Designed by Dante Giacosa, the Fiat 100 engine first appeared in a 633 cc (38.6 cu in) form in the all-new Fiat 600 in 1955. The in-line four-cylinder engine comprised an iron block and an aluminium cylinder head with pushrod actuated valves.
The FIRE series replaced the old Fiat 100 series overhead valve engines in the mid-1980s. Mechanically, they are simple inline-four engines with five main bearings crankshaft and overhead cam heads.

In 1972, its first full year on sale, the Fiat 127 became the first model powered by the 100-series engine (the Fiat Uno being the second) to win the Car of the Year award, soundly beating the Renault 15/17 and Mercedes-Benz 350SL.

The eight-valve version of its Fully Integrated Robotised Engine, commonly known as the FIRE unit, is ending production after 35 years and over 23 million units sold, having resisted many attempts to replace it.
