The FIRE series replaced the old Fiat 100 series overhead valve engines in the mid-1980s. Mechanically, they are simple inline-four engines with five main bearings crankshaft and overhead cam heads. Since 1985, it has been constructed in different versions. Displacements range from 0.8 to 1.4 L; 46.9 to 83.5 cu in (769 to 1,368 cc).
Designed by Dante Giacosa, the Fiat 100 engine first appeared in a 633 cc (38.6 cu in) form in the all-new Fiat 600 in 1955. The in-line four-cylinder engine comprised an iron block and an aluminium cylinder head with pushrod actuated valves.
The FIRE engine is currently used in the slightly modified version of the Formula 750. The FIRE series replaced the old Fiat OHV engine in the mid-1980s. Mechanically, they are simple straight-4 engines with five bearings and overhead cam heads.
After 14 years of being fitted exclusively at the back of many cars, the Fiat 100-series engine at last found a place under the bonnet of a front-wheel-drive model in 1969.

The eight-valve version of its Fully Integrated Robotised Engine, commonly known as the FIRE unit, is ending production after 35 years and over 23 million units sold, having resisted many attempts to replace it.
30 Απρ 2021 · The new FireFly engines are now the focus of the brand's hopes. The 3-cylinder 1.0 (naturally aspirated 70 hp, turbocharged 120 hp) and 4-cylinder 1.3 (150 hp and 180 hp) take over. As the ultimate tribute, the very name of these new engines is composed of the name of Fire.
