NASA FIRMS uses satellite observations from the MODIS and VIIRS instruments to detect active fires and thermal anomalies and deliver this information in near real-time to decision makers through email alerts, analysis ready data, online maps and web services.
The active fire map is a service offered and produced by NASA FIRMS based on the data collected by the MODIS/VIIRS sensors on board the satellites. The information collected is processed quickly and made available to the public within a few hours.

The NASA earth data fire map accumulates the locations of fires detected by moderate-resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board the Terra and Aqua satellites over a 10-day period. Each colored dot indicates a location where MODIS detected at least one fire during the compositing period.
